TURKS & CAICOS HISTORY

From sugar slaves to global tourism

TURKS & CAICOS: WEST CAICOS

West Caicos, 5 miles from Providenciales, is a 23 square kilometers island, almost desert, frequented by fishermen and divers only. The divers can dive on the Molassaes Reef, where lies the wreck of the oldest western hemisphere, prior to 1509, which is fabled to be the Pinta of Columbus. Between 1920 and 1940, West Caicos has hosted a community of Mormons who grew cotton and sisal, there are still the ruins of ghost town and machinery of Yankee Town. On Lake Catherine live flamingos and birds.
