ST. CROIX HISTORY

From sugar slaves to global tourism

Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the mysteries of the Most Holy Trinity. In 1969 a group of St. Croix businessmen met at Harry's Office Bar on Queen Cross Street in Christiansted to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in the customary manner, with drink. Soon a piano was found and a spontaneous party formed with song, a lot more spirits, and traditional Irish greetings that drew passers-by from the streets and local shops. Before you could say Erin Go Bragh a festive crowd, ready for fun, had started a new St. Croix tradition. Since then St Croix has celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a parade featuring songs, dances, masks, and costumes honoring traditional Irish folk culture. The colorful procession winds through the colonial streets of the historic town of Christiansted with all sporting a touch of green representing St. Patrick’s shamrock clovers. The festivity features refreshments and tropical specialties of the local cuisine. After the parade the celebrants continue with neighborhood parties and live music at King's Alley. The event honors not just the Irish but also the many cultures (Danish, Spanish, Irish, Polish, German, American and West African) present in the American Virgin Islands.
