TURKS & CAICOS HISTORY

From sugar slaves to global tourism

TURKS & CAICOS: SALT CAY

TURKS & CAICOS: SALT CAY

Closed in the same lagoon of Grand Turk, Salt Cay gets its name from the salt mines that once occupied almost the entire island. Today it is becoming a tourist destination with some stylish resorts. The island is divided into large squares dominated by windmills and protected by Unesco.

Salt Cay measure 9 square kilometers and counts 60 people living in a couple of villages. The most important village is Balfour Town.  The best beaches stand on the northern coast that lies down for over 3 miles, while the south coast is beaten by violent waves.  Salt Cay is reached from Grand Turk in five minutes flight .
