Submerged reefs,
vertical walls, tunnels, huge sponges, and fish of every
kind, recall here every year thousands of divers. The
true wonder of the island is the Grand Canyon, Grand
Cayman pit, an abyss that plunges more than two thousand
meters up to the bottom of the ocean.
The island is flat: a limestone bench, covered with palm
trees, ponds and mangroves and edged with beautiful
white beaches. The most famous is the Seven Miles Beach,
a continuous ribbon of about 9 kilometers along the west
coast. Grand Cayman is the largest of three islands. It
is 72 square kilometers. The capital is George Town, the
population is approximately 30,000 inhabitants. |
