If ”The Carnival” by definition may be considered nowadays the February’s Rio de Janeiro celebration, Samba’s homeland, we can’t
forget that the most ancient are in the Caribbeans
islands. The “La Vega” Dominican Carnival is dated 1520
and still extremely spectacular. The roots have to be
searched in the African slaves’ dances that in these
occasions used to make fun of their European masters;
the contamination with the Catholic religion allowed to
mix sacred and profane and gave the final mark for this
events.
Practically there is no Caribbean island that doesn’t
have a personal profile of its own Carnival, in the
major islands each region has a peculiar celebration.
Among the most famous and pyrotechnical we wish to
mention the aforementioned Carnival Vegano, Trinidad &
Tobago, American Virgin Islands, Barbados and so on. |
