There are two ways to visit Cuba: a short stay of no
more than a week or a trip of two weeks or longer, as
Cuba is much more vibrant and interesting than you
imagine. For a weeks stay, Havana deserves the majority
of time. But there are many other interesting places in Cuba
that will call to you.
The Habana
Vieja,(Old Havana) is an UNESCO heritage
site, the largest colonial zone still inhabited
in Latin America.
It is currently undergoing a restoration to the
glories of Spanish colonial architecture.
Among many classical stops are the Plaza de
Armas with great views of baroque palaces,
the Palacio de los Generales Captains,
and the 16th century Castillo de la Real
Fuerza, the Plaza de la Catedral, and
Plaza San Francisco. A drink at
Bodeguita del Medio and at the Floridita
is an experience to breathe the Hemingway
atmosphere, or as Hemmingway so aptly put it, My
mojito in La Bodeguita, my daiquiri in El
Floridita. And then there is the famous
Tropicana cabaret with the best dancers in
the country known for fabulous dancers. From
Havana recommended side trips are to Finca la
Vigía, Hemingway’s home just outside of
Havana and to Trinidad, to enjoy the
unique atmosphere of a museum city.
For longer trips take in
Cienfuegos, Santa Clara or go east to
Santiago, the
first capital of Cuba, with colonial and Revolution memories, including the
Moncada Barracks.
Do not miss a stop at the historic café
La Isabela. Near by is
San Juan Hill, site of the mythic heroism of US President Teddy Roosevelt.
To the West is Pinar del Rio, center of the tobacco culture, and picturesque
Vinales.
The sea is the perfect interlude after Havana. For those who love the classic
resorts try, Varadero, others prefer Cayo Largo and Cayo Guillermo, and for
those who enjoy the sea with a bit of nightlife, Cayo Coco.
